A "classic" summer.

Well summer is officially over for us. We are sad to see less of Matt, but I am happy to get back to a normal routine. This summer we decided to watch very little T.V. For a full month we never even turned it on, and for us that is pretty incredible. I decided I needed more literature in my life and for some reason I really wanted to read some classics, like Dickens, Steinbeck, and Twain. I really enjoyed these books but I have to admit Charles Dickens was not the "easy reading" I thought it would be. In fact I always had a dictionary close by.
So these were my reads. David Copperfield by Charles Dickens, Uncle Toms Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, and The Pearl by John Steinbeck.
When going to the library to pick up my books, I was surprised to find them all in the "teen section." I guess I am a little behind when it comes to the great literature of the world! I can't say that any of these books were my favorite, but I have found myself wanting to read a lot more and to watch T.V. a lot less. For me this is quite an improvement.

i love that you chose to turn the tv off. we tried really hard too. i didn't do as well as you but pretty close. "quite time" is necessary now that they don't nap and unfortunately it involves the tv.

p.s. i have read some really great books this year if you're looking for some recommendations!

p.p.s i had to delete my original comment because i was signed in as my mom. didn't want to cause confusion!

We also rarely watch tv. Malachi watches it daily for a little while but Caleb and I haven't seen a tv show forever. We do bring home movies here and there though.

I hope you really enjoyed those books. To me a classic, first of all, has to be a good story, which all of the ones you mentioned, are. Then it has to be told in an interesting way. And there's very few as good as Dickens, Steinbeck, and Twain. But there are dozens more just as good so, get busy and keep the tv off, you've got a lot of reading to do.

How funny. I love the classics too. I just read Jane Eyre and I can't believe I hadn't read it before. I really liked it. Some classics I think are better in c.d. it may be cheating but when I worked in Murray it made the commute much easier. Glad you had such a memorable summer!

Marianne you are SO cute! I didn't know you went to USU. My sister lives up there her husband is a teacher there in the theatre dept. I use picassa to make the collages. it is super easy and free. I like that I can post a lot of pics and not have to do all the work. Next time you come to Utah we should get together! I want to meet your little "twinkies" they are adorable!

I think another "classic" you should read is called MY ANTONIA by WIlla Cather. It's a sweet story of a boys relationship with others while growing up. I love to read.

Marianne, I'm glad that I found you on facebook and that you had a link to your cute blog! I was thinking about some of the sorority girls the other day and hoped to get updates on everyone through FB. You're the first that I've found though! I can't remember last names, so I need to go dig the scrapbook out or something! Your family is cute and how fun that you have twin boys! You look so happy and are still as pretty as ever! I'm jealous that you found time to read! I have two kids and a full time job and don't get to squeeze much reading time in. I loved The Grapes of Wrath in high school and hope to read it again some day (maybe when the kids graduate!). My favorite author is John Grisham. A little different than the classics you just read, but still good!

All that in 1 summer? Impressive! I am working on "Great Expectations" and it definitely is not the quick read I expected. If you haven't read Jane Eyre, add that one to your list. It's a good one!

I have always love to read, I have read some of those but it has been awhile, lately I just read "how to better myself" books. They seem to be the thing that fits me right now.
